Research introduction: "Wikinomics" is nothing new to IBM
For my Erasmus Program at KH Leuven I chose Web Application in Business and for this course I had to do some research about new webtechnologies. Chosing a company and technology wasn't that easy. In the beginning of the course we started with a chapter from the book "Wikinomics". Wikinomics is based on four important new ideas:
- Openness; establishing platforms with company information reachable for millions of people for participation.
- Peering; make information available for other people so they can help to improve it.
- Exchange; contribute to excisting information and share it with others.
- Worldwide activity; information in available online, accessable for everyone with internet-access.
For my research I just started surfing on the Internet and after a while I decided that I would discuss wiki technology for the following company: IBM. When starting at the project I thought about the book we used in the beginning of the course again: "Wikinomics", and it appeared there was a lot of information about IBM in it. This information was mainly about open source though so I started to think about how I could use this together with the new idea of using wiki's within the company. At one point I realized that open source already existed for quite some time and that a wiki is actually something related to it. The thought behind open source is that you work on something together and this idea can also be applied to something like information and that is where the wiki comes into the picture.
IBM has intergrated open source into its core strategy these days and a part of their website is used as an open information community. For the assignment we had to show that we know how to handle new web tecnologies and tha's why I decided to create my own wiki page for my research.
On this wiki the following information can be found:
Open source; one million monkey with computers
